Sagareshwar Wildlife Sanctuary
Sagareshwar Wildlife Sanctuary, covering an area of 10.87 sq km, is one of the smaller sanctuaries in Maharashtra. It is located near Karad in the Krishna River valley. The sanctuary houses a large group of ancient temples built about 700-800 years ago, including approxi
mately 51 temples, with the primary one dedicated to Lord Shiva (Sagareshwar). Other deities also have temples within the sanctuary.
Unlike natural forests, this sanctuary was created through human efforts. While deforestation for personal gain is common, Sagareshwar stands as a testament to reforestation efforts, mainly led by the well-known freedom fighter and environmentalist, Shri Dho. M. Mohite. Thanks to these efforts, the once barren land has now transformed into a thriving sanctuary. While the sanctuary does not have large wild animals, it is home to many deer species like sambar and blackbucks. Other animals such as jackals, foxes, rabbits, and wildcats can also be found here. The forest is rich in birdlife, particularly peacocks, and has around 30-40 species of trees.
