Shri Ganpati Temple, Sangli
The Ganpati Temple in Sangli city is a historical attraction. It was built in 1843 by the first ruler of the Sangli principality, Appasaheb Patwardhan. Before 1808, Patwardhan settled in Sangli and made it his capital. At that time, Sangli was a small village with a population of only about five thousand. To protect the city, the Ganeshdurg Fort was built, and around 1813, construction of the Shri Ganpati Temple began.
Located on the banks of the Krishna River, the temple was cleverly designed to remain safe from floods. The foundation is filled with lime mortar to prevent water from entering even during rising river levels. Shri Ganpati Temple is the presiding deity of the Sangli principality and a place of deep devotion for its residents. People of all religions, not just Hindus, have great faith in Lord Ganesha here. The temple premises have recently been renovated and beautified under the ambitious plans of Shri Shrimant Patwardhan of Sangli.
